Chapter Nine
Starr
I felt really good about my plans. I was headed to the Village Inn to turn in my two weeks notice. Even though I didn’t want to give up my job, I figured that it was time that I put a little more effort into getting my education. I signed up for school at Lively Tech to get my hair license. I feel like that could be a start for me. Chance was already anxious in building me a salon but I didn’t want to do too much at one time. When I told my mama that I was going back to school, she cried. She has been an emotional wreck lately. When she told me that she was going to talk to my daddy about a divorce, I didn’t know how to feel. Even though my father had always been in our lives, he never treated my mother the way she was supposed to be treated.
I walked into the restaurant and all of my coworkers rushed up to me. They rubbed my belly and kissed my cheek. They seemed to be happier than I was. I had already told my manager that I was coming in to bring my notice and she wasn’t feeling it at all. Since I was one of her best workers she wanted me to stay, but she would never understand that my personal life wasn’t fit for having this job.
“I guess you’re moving on up huh?” She asked me.
“Yes, I just wanna focus on school and my family.”
“I understand.” She hugged me and I said my good-byes to everyone.
I drove over to my mama’s house to meet her so that we could have lunch. Ever since Chance’s cousins had moved into town, we had been spending most of our days hanging with them, so I was giving my mama all of my attention today.
I pulled into the driveway and my daddy’s truck was there. They had been very distant lately and I knew that was because of what my mama wanted. I was super shocked when she told me that she was starting to date. She deserved to be happy so I couldn’t blame her.
I was driving Chance’s Hummer so I had to be careful how I got out of it. I was almost five months pregnant, and I was scheduled to see how what I was having. Everyone seemed more excited than I was. I guess it hadn’t hit me yet.
I went into the house and it was quiet. I walked towards my parents’ room and my mother was standing at the door with her ear to it. She put her finger up for me not to say anything, and she waved me down to come and listen with her. I put my ear to the door and couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“Yeah, we just left from dinner, but I’ll see in about thirty minutes. I’m leaving here and coming straight there. Yeah, did you get the wine that I like? Okay baby.
